Personalized brain stimulation shows preliminary benefits for some autistic traits in controlled trial

A preliminary study exploring non-invasive brain stimulation has shown potential benefits for some autistic traits in a controlled trial, adding to the growing body of research on neurodiversity-affirming approaches. The study, published in Nature Molecular Psychiatry in April 2026, examined whether accelerated intermittent theta burst stimulation (aTBS) targeting individualized brain networks might affect social communication and other traits.
Individualized neuromodulation approach
These come amid broader funding challenges noted in the Autism Science Foundation's 2025 review.
The trial used MRI scans to identify each participant's unique fronto-parietal control network - brain regions involved in social cognition. Participants receiving active stimulation showed greater changes in some measured traits compared to those receiving sham treatment, with effects lasting at least eight weeks. The researchers noted this 'suggests potential for individualized neuromodulation approaches' while emphasizing the need for further study.
Medication trends amid evidence gaps
Prescriptions for leucovorin - a folate supplement - have increased among autistic children despite limited evidence for its effectiveness, according to research from UC San Diego. A Brown University study found prescription rates rose 37% following increased media attention, while NPR reported on similar past cycles of enthusiasm for unproven autism treatments.
Research investments continue
Two research networks recently secured funding for autism studies. UCLA and Children's Hospital Los Angeles received a $17.25 million grant for clinical trials, while Duke and UNC researchers will lead a $12.9 million study on care systems. These come amid broader funding challenges noted in the Autism Science Foundation's 2025 review.
The study adds to ongoing exploration of neuromodulation approaches while highlighting the importance of balancing innovation with rigorous evidence standards in autism research.
