Emerging research suggests these may share underlying biological links with autism itself.

Epilepsy and Autism

Epilepsy affects between 5% and 30% of autistic individuals, according to a 2022 population study published in Psychological Medicine. The relationship appears bidirectional: autistic traits are more common in people with epilepsy, and epilepsy is more common in autistic individuals. A 2019 study highlighted potential shared neurological pathways, though causal mechanisms remain unclear.

Similarly, some researchers hypothesize overlaps in brain-gut communication might explain GI patterns, though this remains an area of active investigation.
