New Research Explores Connections Between Autism, Epilepsy, GI Differences, and Anxiety

Connections Between Autism and Other Experiences
Many autistic people also experience other health differences at higher rates than the general population. Three of the most commonly co-occurring experiences are epilepsy, gastrointestinal (GI) patterns, and anxiety. Emerging research suggests these may share underlying biological links with autism itself.
Epilepsy and Autism
Epilepsy affects between 5% and 30% of autistic individuals, according to a 2022 population study published in Psychological Medicine. The relationship appears bidirectional: autistic traits are more common in people with epilepsy, and epilepsy is more common in autistic individuals. A 2019 study highlighted potential shared neurological pathways, though causal mechanisms remain unclear.

Gastrointestinal Experiences

Anxiety is commonly reported among autistic individuals, with studies like the 2022 Cambridge research finding elevated rates that often increase with age. Exploring Why These Experiences May Cluster
Researchers are examining whether these co-occurring experiences share genetic, immune, or neurological connections with autism. The 2019 PMC study proposed that variations in early brain development could simultaneously influence autism, epilepsy, and sensory processing. Similarly, some researchers hypothesize overlaps in brain-gut communication might explain GI patterns, though this remains an area of active investigation.
While exact connections are still being mapped, the frequency of these co-occurring experiences underscores the value of healthcare approaches that consider multiple systems while centering autistic well-being.
