Canada has approved the first prescription melatonin treatment designed for autistic children and adolescents experiencing persistent sleep differences. SLENYTO®, an extended-release melatonin tablet, was authorized by Health Canada for autistic children and those with Smith-Magenis syndrome (SMS) who experience significant sleep initiation and maintenance patterns.

While melatonin is available over-the-counter in many regions, SLENYTO® represents the first formulation with pediatric-specific dosing and pharmaceutical-grade purity standards. Its prescription status enables medical supervision for dosing, which shows significant individual variability in response according to the same Cureus review of 18 randomized controlled trials involving 1,200 participants.
The Child Mind Institute notes that while short-term use appears generally safe, questions remain about prolonged use during development.
